We were deeply disappointed that the Demographic Planning Commission has failedto hear the strongconcernswhich we brought forward during the Hearings.Concerns, that In Alberta, seniors are being denied rights and protection.That in Alberta elder care facilities, seniors can be harmed with impunity becausethere is no viable, enforceable legislation. The Protection For Persons in Care Act isnon-punitive and has no power to protect vulnerable seniors.In Alberta, the Human RightsCommission legislation fails to include seniors in the areawherethey are most vulnerable. Sections 4 & 5 of the Act excludes age in the area ofgoods,services, accommodation, facilities and tenancy.In Alberta, the Dependent Adults Act legislation (proposed Bill # 24 Guardianship andTrusteeshipAct) strips all rights from vulnerable senior citizens who have beendisarmed to defend themselves.We are saddened to find, that this is one more costly Commission which disregardsthe most vital need for seniors to have legislated rights and protection.
