Castleview Wychwood Towers, Toronto
Police say they responded to a call for “a medical complaint” at
a long-term care facility on Christie St. north of Dupont St., around
8:30 a.m. Saturday.
Found dead was Francisco DaSilva, 87, who was pronounced dead at
the scene. His elderly roommate, Francesco Greco, 81, was taken into custody.
and charged with second-degree murder.

CONTRIBUTING FACTORS TO SUCH INCIDENTS

– Understaffing – warehousing of residents

– Staff have limited training (or no training at all) and
therefore limited understanding of alzheimer & dementia
type illness.

– Improper placement – a confused, cognitively, impaired person
housed in close proximity to another cognitively impaired person
who may become violent.
Anger, violence, aggression is common in alzheimer patients.
Aggressive behaviors can occur suddenly, with no apparent reason
& can be caused by many factors including physical discomfort, illness
(urinary tract infection) environmental factors and poor communication.

This is the second time this year that a senior in the Toronto area has been
slain at a nursing home allegedly by a fellow resident.

– Attitude. We have knowledge of secure units which house
cognitively impaired persons, which are not staffed throughout the night.
Patients are simply locked in.
