VICTIM DIED IN HOSPITAL IN AUGUST
On July 20, Edmonton police were called to a senior’s home near 95 Street and 108A Avenue after a report of a break and enter, police said in a news release Thursday.
Police said that a woman gained entry into the suite of 83-year-old Giuseppina Micieli and assaulted her. Micieli was treated and transported to hospital by emergency services with serious injuries from the assault.
A few days later, the woman was identified and charged with break and enter, aggravated assault and forcible confinement.
THIS WAS NOT THE FIRST TIME.
At the time of this alleged offence, she was out on recognizance for a series of break-and-enters of senior homes. This was not the first time.On August. 26, police said Micieli died of her injuries in hospital. An autopsy was conducted on August 27, and the medical examiner determined the cause of death to be pneumonia caused by blunt force injuries from the assault.
The manner of death is determined to be a homicide.
CHARGED WITH FIRST DEGREE MURDER
Cynthia Hamelin, 49, is charged with first-degree murder. Police say Hamelin and Micieli were not known to each other.
Investigators are not looking for any additional suspects.
