Rape culture
Home > Sexual Assault > Rape cultureRAPE CULTURE persists in our Long term care system.
In 2013, it was reported that there had been SIXTY COMPLAINTS
of sexual assault to the Protection For Persons in Care over
a period of two years.
Those were complaints where someone was courageous enough to
make the complaint. Because of the numbers of complaints we receive,
we believe the numbers are higher, clients and families are afraid
to complain, they tell us but then are reluctant to go further.
Nevertheless despite our strong objections and complaints, MALE
CAREGIVERS CONTINUE TO BE ALLOWED TO GIVE PERSONAL CARE, SHOWERS,
BATHS, PERINEAL CARE TO VULNERABLE FEMALE CLIENTS.
At a recent Fatality Inquiry, the mother of a 22 year old woman,
told the Inquiry how when she came on the Unit at Alberta Hospital
she heard her daughter screaming. She found her vulnerable daughter
in the shower room, standing naked next to the shower and a male
nurse preparing to shower her.
In an account which emanated from a large Calgary care facility,
when the RN, the Director of Care was informed of the assault,
she replied, “Was it R—?” She obviously knew.
The writer, Supra Dwivedi has stated, “Rape culture, however can be
loosely defined as a culture wherein the dominant attitudes toward
rape, FACILITATE, TOLERATE AND EXCUSE RAPISTS” 02/05/16
