Denise Scriven & Michael Scriven, each began a 20 month jail sentence
for failing to provide the necessaries of life to 48 year old Betty Anne Gagnon.
After Gagnon’s death in 2009, the medical examiner determined she died of
a head injury.
Gagnon, had been confined in a basement, a dog run & an unheated,
converted school bus with no water or electricity. She weighed just 65 pounds
at time of death.
The Scrivens were initially charged with manslaughter, unlawful confinement &
assault, but instead pleaded guilty to failing to provide the necessaries of life to a
person under their care – Section 215 of the Criminal Code.
Gagnon was mentally and developmentally delayed due to oxygen deprivation at birth.
