DETAINEES HELD IN ACTIVE TREATMENT BEDS, LOCKED UNITS, ALBERTA HOSPITAL & ELSEWHERE.

Honourable Minister of Justice, Ms. Alison Redford, who is also a human rights lawyer, regarding the
matter of numbers of seniors being detained in active treatment beds. They are given little or no nursing
care, no recreation, no mental stimulation, never taken out of doors and many are never allowed to leave
the unit even to go to the hospital cafeteria for a cup of coffee with a friend. They are made to spend their
days imprisoned in poorly lit, somewhat less than pleasant rooms, some which are reportedly cold at night
in ill fitting and uncomfortable beds. One six foot man who has been held since October, who obviously
does not fit the hospital bed, cried and asked us to help him to leave. It is ‘policy’ to keep these seniors in
pyjamas, closely guarded by security guards/ or staff posted at their doorway.
Some of these detainees were living independently, paying their utilities, taxes until they entered hospital
for care and then were not allowed to again leave.
They are not being served with the documents which are keeping them detained, We have knowledge
of family members, even lawyers who have been denied access to documents. in one instance, huge,
burly security guards were called when a small senior with son approached the nursing desk to
request documents. They left empty handed. We have a notice from a Capitol Health employee which
informed a lawyer that documents would not be released.
Criminals at the Remand Center must be given full disclosure as to why they are being detained and
charges against them. .
We are again calling for a full Inquiry into the matter of competency assessments and wrongful detention
and general abuse of seniors.
