Death of James Cairns, April 22, 2007BETHANY CARE CENTER, 916 18A Street NW. Calgary, AB. It is troubling, that Mr. James Cairns was placed in close proximity to a resident who expressed strong paranoic fears to staff and famiiy. It is further troubling that night staff failed to hear and intervene in this violent, deadly, altercation. This incident again reinforces our finding, that secure (locked) dementia units are unattended during the night. It is even more troubling that upon admission to the Bethany Care Center, Mr. Driscoll was assessed to be cognitively impaired and thus detained behind locked doors in a dementia unit, stripped of all rights. However, prior to the trial, he was assessed and deemed fit to stand trial for murder. At the trial he was ordered to be confined to the locked Forensic Ward of Alberta Hospital Edmonton for assessment. Was Mr. Driscoll the assailant? There were no witnesses to the deadly assault. May 24, 2009, on the same unit, E.B. was found in pain, gravely injured, both eyes blackened, blood oozing out of her eyes and mouth. Three weeks later, she died. This sudden death continues to be under investigation by government. We have a photograph of the injuries. We continue our call for cameras to monitor the care of vulnerable residents.
