A nursing aide who sexually assaulted a 91-year-old in

a seniors home was sentenced to five years in prison

Rex Ongee Okumu, 41, was convicted in August of sexual

assault on a resident of the Brentwood Care Centre.

During the trial earlier this summer, a nursing assistant

testified she found Okumu, his pants and underwear around

his ankles, bent over the woman in a compromising position.

The woman suffers from dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

The convicted rapist was known to be a problem and therefore had been moved from nights to days so that he could be ‘watched’ but later managed to have himselfmoved to afternoons. According to court testimony, when the staff person, who was very distressed by the incident, informed the Director of Care on the evening of Saturday,July 3rd, 2004, that something “awful” had happened, without hesitation the Director of Care responded, “Was it Rex?”.Senior management persons at the nursing home stronglyattempted to silence the matter. Nursing staff wereinstructed not to make any entries in the victim’s file. The victim was not sent for a rape examination for twodays though ward staff suggested she be immediately sent. Police not called until Monday July 5/04, 11:00 AM.Justice Scott Brooker ordered Okumu to register as asex offender in Canada for 20 years, and provide a DNA sample for the national offenders data bankhis case again demonstrates the need for mandatoryvideo surveillance in seniors care facilities, much likecameras already in day cares. (See letter to YvonneFritz dated April 24, 2006.)

Very elderly persons are really like frail children, they need

the same protection and assurance of safety.

Health providers have a duty of care to provide reasonable

safety to their clients, in this instance, the duty of care wasseriously breached.”(See letter to Iris Evans August 31/06)
