VANCOUVER Police arrested a 47-year-old man Friday morning in connection with the theft of rings from the fingers of an elderly woman in Vancouver General hospital.

“This person has a long history of property crimes and crimes of this nature against the elderly,” said Vancouver police spokeswoman Const. Jana McGuinness.

The callous theft against the bedridden woman “touched the hearts of a lot of people,” said McGuinness. “This is a person lying in a hospital bed completely helpless.”

Agnes Ulmer was in her hospital bed at Vancouver General hospital on Saturday when a man entered her room and whispered to her that he needed to take her rings for cleaning. The thief took her wedding ring, her mom’s ring and another bought for her by her now-deceased husband of 63 years.

The suspect’s name has not been released.
